Melbourne Trivia Nights: Team Up and Meet People

Also in: HamburgMunichLondonChicagoManchesterEdinburghBristolDublinVancouverSydneyBrisbane

Nine trivia nights in Melbourne, from the CBD, Southbank, Fitzroy and Richmond to Hawthorn East, Malvern East, Seddon and Footscray. When and where they are, how big the teams are and what they cost.

A team of four in their late twenties and thirties at a timber table in the covered courtyard of an old corner pub on a mild spring evening, festoon lights under a corrugated iron roof and a vine climbing the brick wall behind them; one woman throws up her hands laughing at the last answer, one man taps the answer sheet with his pencil, two others grin at each other, warm evening light

A trivia night is an easy way to meet people in Melbourne: a set evening, a small team at one table and time to talk between rounds. Each quiz listed here is advertised as ongoing on the organiser's or venue's own page or channel.

After the quiz

Between rounds and after the answers are read out is the best time to talk. Simple openers work: "Do you come here often?", "Which question annoyed you most?", "Do you know another good trivia night?" And if the team got on well, arrange to meet at the next quiz.

For people who run a quiz

If you run a quiz like these, you know the moment after the answers when the teams head off without swapping numbers. before is a web app for organisers. At the start you show the QR code on your phone; guests check in with it in their browser, without installing an app, and anyone who likes takes a selfie. The day after, the afterparty is open from 10 am to 8 pm. Anyone who shared a selfie sees everyone else who shared one there and can press the button for meeting again for up to five people. At 8 pm everyone finds out at the same time who wants to see each other again, and only then does a chat open. One-sided wishes stay invisible, and nobody receives a rejection. Nobody needs a profile. More on the page before for organisers.

The afterparty opens after your event

When you check in at an event powered by before, you get the link by email, no later than 24 hours after it ends.
