Also in: BerlinCologneMunichViennaZurichLondonParis (French)Barcelona (Spanish)Rio de Janeiro (Portuguese)

Eight shared tables in Hamburg, from dinners with strangers in restaurants to Slow Food's round table, community kitchens, a neighbourhood table and cookery classes ending with a meal. Where, how often, what it costs.

Guests in their late twenties and thirties at tables pushed together in a small community kitchen with white-tiled walls and steamed-up windows on a rainy evening; a man ladles soup from a big pot, a woman passes bowls along, two laugh

At a shared table you sit next to people you have never met, and the food gives you the first thing to talk about. We only list tables that announce their dinners on their own page or channel. Dates and prices change, so check the organiser's page before you go.

After dinner

Simple openers work: "Have you been to one of these before?", "What's the best thing you've eaten in Hamburg lately?", "Can you recommend another table like this one?" And if you got on well with someone, suggest going to the next date together.

For people who host a supper club

If you host a table like these, you know the moment at the door when guests leave without swapping numbers. before is a web app for organisers. When guests arrive you show the QR code on your phone; they check in with it in their browser, without installing an app, and anyone who likes takes a selfie. The day after, the afterparty is open from 10 am to 8 pm. Anyone who shared a selfie sees everyone else who shared one there and can press the button for meeting again for up to five people. At 8 pm everyone finds out at the same time who wants to see each other again, and only then does a chat open. One-sided wishes stay invisible, and nobody receives a rejection. Nobody needs a profile. More on the page before for organisers.

The afterparty opens after your event

When you check in at an event powered by before, you get the link by email, no later than 24 hours after it ends.
