A games night, an English pub quiz, language cafés, an after-work meet-up, a writing group, a pop choir and a painting course: real ways to meet people in Bremen.

This guide sorts the options by type, with concrete examples. We only list what the organisers describe on their own pages. Times change, so check the organiser's own page before you go.

Games and quizzes
At a games table you have something to do and talk about straight away. The games group Spielrausch meets on Mondays from 18:00 to 22:00 at the Bürgerhaus Weserterrassen on the Osterdeich and explicitly invites new people to join in. It is free (2026); the page does not mention signing up, so just come on time at 18:00. Exceptions are listed in the calendar for the venue, so check it before you go.
At Hegarty's, an Irish pub at Ostertorsteinweg 80 in Ostertor, there is a quiz in English every Monday, starting at 20:30. According to the pub, you can play on your own or ask the staff to put you in a team; teams of up to five are recommended, and larger teams get a points penalty.
Language cafés and meeting places
At a language café you practise German in conversation and meet people along the way. The city library invites people to the SprachCafé in the Lernstudio on the second floor of the Zentralbibliothek, the central library, to speak German together and get to know each other. It takes place on some Thursdays from 15:00 to 16:00, is free and, according to the library, is for adults (2026). The page does not mention signing up or a fixed rhythm, so check the library's calendar for the next date.
The Sprachcafé Deutsch in Vegesack, run jointly by the AWO and the city library, takes place at the Vegesack library on some Mondays from 14:30 to 16:00. According to the library, everyone is welcome, whatever their level of German; it is for adults, free and needs no sign-up (2026).
Das Café, run by the Malteser, is a meeting place for refugees and people from Bremen, with conversation, board games and a chance to speak German, on Fridays from 15:00 at the Bremen-West library in Gröpelingen. Upcoming dates are also listed in the Gröpelingen library's calendar. The Malteser give 17:00 as the finish time and the library's calendar 18:00, so check before you go. According to the library, it is free (2026); the Malteser do not say how to sign up.
The neighbourhood centre Jetzt Hier at Konsul-Smidt-Straße 38 in the Überseestadt runs a language café and describes itself as a place where the neighbourhood connects. According to the AWO's overview, the language café takes place on Wednesdays from 13:30 to 15:00 and is free (2026).
After work
The Feierabendtreff Bremen is an after-work meet-up every other Thursday from 18:00 at changing venues, most recently a restaurant on the Schlachte. Non-members are welcome too. Taking part is free; you pay for your own food and drinks (2026). You do not have to sign up, but a short email beforehand helps with planning, and if you are coming alone for the first time, you can write ahead and someone will meet you at the entrance.
Writing, singing and painting
Doing something together quickly gives you something to talk about. The Offene Schreibwerkstatt, an open writing workshop run by the Literaturhaus Bremen, meets once a month on the third Thursday at 20:15 at the Villa Ichon in the Viertel. It is for people aged 20 and over who are already working on a prose project. Sign up by email at least a week before; the page does not state a price.
The Mio-Chor at the Mio-Studio, Hohentorsheerstraße 15-17, in the Neustadt, is a pop choir for adults, and according to its page you do not need any experience. Rehearsals are on Wednesdays at 19:00, and from November 2026 a new group meets on Tuesdays at 19:00. There is currently a waiting list for new members, and a new sign-up period for the new group opens in November. A taster session costs €9.99, then €27.90 a month (2026).
The Kulturhaus Pusdorf at Woltmershauser Straße 444 runs the course Freie Ölmalerei (self-directed oil painting) on Wednesdays from 10:00 to 12:00; according to the Kulturhaus programme, it is for adults and open to beginners. Ten sessions cost €70 (2026); sign up with the Kulturhaus by phone or email. Ask them whether a new course is starting soon.
Going alone
Pick one format and go three times before you judge it. The first evening is often the most awkward, and every time you return, you are more likely to see familiar faces. A shared activity can make it easier to start a conversation by giving you something to talk about: the game, the language, the text. Two options make going alone explicitly easy: at the Feierabendtreff Bremen you can write ahead and be met at the entrance, and at Hegarty's you can ask the staff to put you in a team.
Good openers are deliberately ordinary: "Is this your first time too?", "How did you find out about it?", "Do you play here often?" Ask one follow-up question and listen to the answer.
Making plans to meet again
A good conversation does not turn into a second meeting on its own. Before you leave, suggest something concrete: "Are you coming to play again next Monday?" or "I'm going to the language café on Friday, want to come?" A specific suggestion is easier to answer than "We should do something sometime".
Try it this week
- Pick one format from the table above
- Put the date in your calendar and check it on the organiser's page
- Arrive five minutes early and talk to one person
- Before you leave, suggest a specific plan to meet again
For organisers
If you host evenings like these, you know the moment: people get on well and then lose touch. before is a web app for organisers. Guests check in at the door with a QR code in their browser, without installing an app, and anyone who likes takes a selfie. The day after, the afterparty is open from 10 am to 8 pm. Anyone who shared a selfie sees everyone else who shared one there and can press the button for meeting again for up to five people. At 8 pm everyone finds out at the same time who wants to see each other again, and only then does a chat open. One-sided wishes stay invisible, and nobody receives a rejection. Nobody needs a profile. More on the page before for organisers.
