This guide sorts the options by type, with concrete examples. We only list what the organisers describe on their own pages. Times change, so check the organiser's own page before you go.

Options by type
Running
A fixed time, a shared route and a chat afterwards. At KRAFT Thursday Köln, the KRAFT Runners meet on Thursdays at 19:00 at the Zappes ZENTRALE, Roonstraße 71, with no sign-up and every pace welcome; you can leave your bag there. Training details are posted on Instagram beforehand.
Milers Colonia is a Cologne running club with several group sessions a week. On Thursdays at 18:30, the After Work Run starts at the eastern end of the Clarenbachkanal: an easy run of about 8 to 12 km through the Stadtwald, in different pace groups. On Sundays at 10:00, the Long Run sets off from the Stadtwaldkreisel on Kitschburger Straße as a big group, also in pace groups, so that nobody has to run alone. There is also a track session on Wednesdays and a tempo session on Saturdays.
Frontrunners Cologne describe themselves as the running group of the LGBTQI sports club SC Janus. Their running meet-up starts on Mondays and Wednesdays at 19:00 in the Stadtwald, open to all levels, in small groups by pace and distance. You can simply turn up or write to the group first.
Languages and international evenings
At Social Melting Pot, locals, newcomers and language learners meet every Wednesday at 19:00 at Craftbeer Corner Coeln, Martinstraße 32, in the Altstadt. At the bar you get stickers with the flags of the languages you speak and are learning, which makes the first hello easier. The boarding card usually costs €6 and includes one drink and the stickers (2026). The organiser describes the evening as a relaxed meet-up where strangers become familiar faces.
Zucker Sülz's Café International offers informal conversations in German and English every other Saturday from 16:00 to 18:00, at the Evangelisch-Freikirchliche Gemeinde Kölner Stadtmission, Berrenrather Straße 354, in Sülz. Drinks and attendance are free (2026).
At the language café run by the Adventgemeinde Köln, Pantaleonswall 40-48, in Altstadt-Süd, people from different backgrounds meet on Thursdays at 18:00 to practise German or English in conversation. There is a German and an English language café, and everyone is welcome, whatever their level. Drinks and snacks are free (2026).
Cologne Social is a large Meetup group where English is spoken. About every two weeks, there are drinks and conversation on Tuesdays at 19:00 at Cafe Especial, Neuhöfferstraße 32, in Deutz, plus dinners at different restaurants, each announced separately. Some dates have limited places; sign up for each date on Meetup.
Dinner and brunch with strangers
Timeleft brings groups of four to six strangers together for dinner at a restaurant in Cologne on Wednesdays at 19:00. You book on your own, and the app shows you the venue twelve hours before. To book, you need a subscription whose price depends on the plan you choose; you pay for food and drinks at the venue (2026).
The Köln Coffee Club is, according to its group page, for people aged 25 to 45, especially newcomers to Cologne, and brings four to six people together for brunch on some Sundays at 12:30 in a café in the Altstadt or the Südstadt. Sign-up and tickets go through the Groupvibe platform; you get the exact address the night before if you have bought a ticket or a membership.
Games and the neighbourhood
At a games table you have something to do and talk about straight away. The international games night Let's play! at the Allerweltshaus takes place on the third Tuesday of each month at 19:00 in the Allerweltshaus café, Geisselstraße 3-5, in Ehrenfeld, and it is free (2026). Games include Uno, Skyjo and Catan. According to the listing on Wiku, it is for refugees and long-time Cologne residents alike; people who want to learn German and make new contacts are especially welcome, and new players can join at any time.
Liebig257, run by the association KLuG right by Nippes station, is an open living room for meeting people in the neighbourhood, with a calendar full of open activities. An open knitting group for beginners and experienced knitters meets on Tuesdays from 16:00 to 18:00; bring your own needles and yarn. On several Tuesdays, there is a community music session on a donation basis (arrive from 17:30, start at 18:00), and you do not need any experience. The open bike workshop is open on Saturdays from 12:00 to 17:00.
Going alone
Pick one format and go three times before you judge it. The first evening is often the most awkward, and every time you return, you are more likely to see familiar faces. A shared activity can make it easier to start a conversation by giving you something to talk about: the route, the language, the game.
Good openers are deliberately ordinary: "Is this your first time too?", "How did you find out about it?", "Do you run with them often?" Ask one follow-up question and listen to the answer.
Making plans to meet again
A good conversation does not turn into a second meeting on its own. Before you leave, suggest something concrete: "Are you coming running again next Thursday?" or "I'm going to the language café on Saturday, want to come?" A specific suggestion is easier to answer than "We should do something sometime".
Try it this week
- Pick one format from the table above
- Put the date in your calendar and check it on the organiser's page
- Arrive five minutes early and talk to one person
- Before you leave, suggest a specific plan to meet again
For organisers
If you host evenings like these, you know the moment: people get on well and then lose touch. before is a web app for organisers. Guests check in at the door with a QR code in their browser, without installing an app, and anyone who likes takes a selfie. The day after, the afterparty is open from 10 am to 8 pm. Anyone who shared a selfie sees everyone else who shared one there and can press the button for meeting again for up to five people. At 8 pm everyone finds out at the same time who wants to see each other again, and only then does a chat open. One-sided wishes stay invisible, and nobody receives a rejection. Nobody needs a profile. More on the page before for organisers.
