Languages and international evenings
At the Graz Weekly Language Exchange, people from different countries meet every Thursday from 20:00 to 23:00 to practise languages together, currently at Mi Casa, Mariahilfer Straße 24, according to Meetup. Beginners are just as welcome as advanced speakers. Entry is free, and you pay for your own food and drinks (2026). You can say you are coming on Meetup, but the group does not say you have to.
Global in Graz describes itself as a monthly meet-up for anyone with an international outlook, and English is the shared language. According to the group, newcomers, students and locals are among those welcome. Most recently the group met in the evening at 19:30 at the Falcara Irish Pub, Prokopigasse 2; check Meetup to see whether the next evening has been announced. Joining is free, you pay for your own drinks (2026), and the group asks you to sign up on Meetup.
The city library's Sprachcafé der Stadtbibliothek, at the Zanklhof branch, Maria-Stromberger-Gasse 2, is for people who are new to Graz or want to practise German. It takes place every other Monday from 16:30 to 17:30, and you do not need to sign up.
Running
A fixed time, a shared route and a chat afterwards. The Kleine Zeitung Lauftreff run by runninGraz starts on Thursdays, usually at 18:00 at the Augartensteg, and according to runninGraz is for anyone who enjoys running. Times and meeting points can vary, so check the calendar entry for your Thursday. You will also find current details in the runninGraz Strava club.
Games
At a games table you have something to do and talk about straight away. Ludovico, Karmeliterplatz 2, holds an open games night with board and table games about once a month. According to the organiser, you can come on your own or as a pair and join a table that is already playing. There is a buffet for a voluntary donation (2026); the page does not give an entry price. The date and time are in the events calendar.
Music and singing
At the pub The Dublin Road, Abraham-a-Santa-Clara-Gasse 2, there is a Traditional Irish Music Session every Wednesday. From 19:30 to 21:00 a slower session lets beginners play along and learn, and the regular session starts at 21:00. According to the pub, you can join in without any experience; the page does not mention booking.
At Sound in the City, the Steirisches Volksliedwerk invites people several times a year to an intercultural music get-together: you can play, sing or simply listen. Everyone is welcome, even without experience or an instrument; entry is free (2026), and you do not need to sign up. The venue changes from date to date, for example Café Global, Leechgasse 24, or the Andrä Foyer, so check the association's page before you go.
The Grazer Universitätschor, the university choir, rehearses on Tuesdays from 19:00 to 22:00, usually at the Alte Technik, Rechbauerstraße 12; some rehearsals are held elsewhere, so check the rehearsal schedule. According to the choir, new singers with choir experience join in the first three rehearsals of the semester and sign up beforehand; the trial rehearsals are free. After that, a semester costs €15 for people in education or training and €20 for people in work (2026/27).
Dancing and speaking
At the Lateinamerika Institut Steiermark, the course Salsa Cubana 0 teaches you the first steps. The beginners' course runs on 14 Wednesday evenings per semester from 17:30 to 18:30 at Glacisstraße 61A and costs €140 (2026/27). You sign up on the course page; check there when you can start.
The Toastmasters club Erster Grazer Rhetorik Club meets on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month at 18:15 at Nussbaumerstraße 36. The evenings are about practising speaking in front of others, and guests are explicitly welcome; you can sign up as a guest on the club's page. According to Toastmasters, the club is open to anyone interested.
Going alone
Pick one format and go three times before you judge it. The first evening is often the most awkward, and every time you return, you are more likely to see familiar faces. A shared activity can make it easier to start a conversation by giving you something to talk about: the language, the route, the game, the song.
Good openers are deliberately ordinary: "Is this your first time too?", "How did you find out about it?", "Which language are you practising?" Ask one follow-up question and listen to the answer.
Making plans to meet again
A good conversation does not turn into a second meeting on its own. Before you leave, suggest something concrete: "Are you coming to the language evening again next Thursday?" or "I'm joining the next group run, want to come?" A specific suggestion is easier to answer than "We should do something sometime".
Try it this week
- Pick one format from the table above
- Put the date in your calendar and check it on the organiser's page
- Arrive five minutes early and talk to one person
- Before you leave, suggest a specific plan to meet again
For organisers
If you host evenings like these, you know the moment: people get on well and then lose touch. before is a web app for organisers. Guests check in at the door with a QR code in their browser, without installing an app, and anyone who likes takes a selfie. The day after, the afterparty is open from 10 am to 8 pm. Anyone who shared a selfie sees everyone else who shared one there and can press the button for meeting again for up to five people. At 8 pm everyone finds out at the same time who wants to see each other again, and only then does a chat open. One-sided wishes stay invisible, and nobody receives a rejection. Nobody needs a profile. More on the page before for organisers.
