We only list what the organisers describe on their own pages. Times change, so check the organiser's own page before you go.

Options by type
Running
A fixed time, a shared route and often a coffee afterwards. The Vienna Running Collective is an ambitious running group: speed sessions on Tuesdays at 19:00 on the track or the Prater Hauptallee, a fartlek from Praterstern on Fridays at 7:00, which the club says suits everyone because it is about effort rather than pace, and a long run on Sundays from Superfood Deli, Maria-Theresien-Straße 5. The runs are open to everyone, and according to the club you need neither to sign up nor to become a member; track sessions cost €5 a day without a WLV Track Card (2026). After the Sunday run the club explicitly invites you to stay for a coffee and a chat. The weekly schedule is on Strava and Instagram.
Dinner with strangers
Timeleft matches you with four to six people you have not met for dinner in a Vienna restaurant on Wednesdays and Fridays at 19:00. You book alone, and the app shows the venue twelve hours beforehand. You need a subscription to book, and the price depends on the plan you choose; you pay for food and drinks at the venue (2026).
Board game nights
At a game table you have something to do and something to talk about straight away. FUSE's Board Game Tuesday normally runs every Tuesday from 19:00 to 22:00 at the Mausen Bar in the 9th district, except on some holidays; the organiser explicitly describes it as a chance to meet new people too. Entry is free, and the bar asks you to order something.
The Vienna Boardgamers play on Thursdays from 18:00 at Café Merkur in the 8th district. Newcomers are welcome, and games can be played in English. The evening is free; you pay for food and drinks at the café.
Reading and talking
The Social Book Club meets on Fridays at 19:00 at MUT, Rechte Wienzeile 37, in the 4th district. You do not need to bring a book or even be reading one. Among other things, there is also a monthly History and Society Circle at Hotel Schani Salon, for which you should have read the announced book beforehand. The group asks for a voluntary donation (2026).
Language meetups
If you speak French or want to practise it, the Table de français à Vienne meets every Wednesday at 18:30, currently at Café Merkur. The group explicitly welcomes newcomers and anyone who would rather just listen at first. It asks you to RSVP on Meetup so that enough space is reserved at the café.
Singing and courses
A regular course or choir gives you a chance to see the same people over several weeks. The V.O.I.C.E Choir Light is, according to the organiser, meant especially for beginners and rehearses in three groups, on Mondays, Wednesdays or Thursdays, at the Musikgymnasium in Neustiftgasse in the 7th district. You can join from age 16; according to the organiser, the Wednesday group is for female voices only, and on Mondays there are currently places only for male voices. A semester costs €150, or €130 for students under 27 (2026). You need to register, and places are limited for each voice part.
The Vienna Atelier of Traditional Art at Hütteldorfer Straße 128 in the 14th district runs a weekly fundamentals course in drawing and painting, on Saturdays or Sundays from 9:30 to 12:30 or on Wednesdays from 17:30 to 20:30. Five sessions on fixed dates cost €200, five flexible sessions €275, and a trial class for newcomers €40 (2026). You sign up through the contact form or by email.
Dancing
Billie's Studio holds a salsa and bachata party every Saturday at Jaz in the City, Windmühlgasse 28, in the 6th district. According to the organiser it is open to everyone, and entry costs €10 (2026).
Going alone
Pick one format and go three times before you judge it. The first evening is often the most awkward, and every time you return, you are more likely to see familiar faces. A shared activity can make it easier to start a conversation by giving you something to talk about: the route, the game, the song, the book.
Good openers are deliberately ordinary: "Is this your first time too?", "How did you find out about it?", "Do you know this game already?" Ask one follow-up question and listen to the answer.
Making plans to meet again
A good conversation does not turn into a second meeting on its own. Before you leave, suggest something concrete: "Are you coming again next Tuesday?" or "I'm going to the game night on Thursday, want to come?" A specific suggestion is easier to answer than "We should do something sometime".
Try it this week
- Pick one weekly format from the table above
- Put the date in your calendar and check it on the organiser's page
- Arrive five minutes early and talk to one person
- Before you leave, suggest a specific plan to meet again
For organisers
If you host evenings like these, you know the moment: people get on well and then lose touch. before is a web app for organisers. Guests check in at the door with a QR code in their browser, without installing an app, and anyone who likes takes a selfie. The day after, the afterparty is open from 10 am to 8 pm. Anyone who shared a selfie sees everyone else who shared one there and can press the button for meeting again for up to five people. At 8 pm everyone finds out at the same time who wants to see each other again, and only then does a chat open. One-sided wishes stay invisible, and nobody receives a rejection. Nobody needs a profile. More on the page before for organisers.
