A games night, chess, a pub quiz, a brunch, English conversation, knitting, an open get-together, a welcome meeting for newcomers, swing dancing and two choirs: real ways to meet people in Salzburg.

Salzburg has plenty of open meet-ups in its neighbourhoods, from a Tuesday games night to a Monday afternoon knitting circle, and if you go regularly, you can see the same people again. This guide sorts the options by type, with concrete examples. Some meet on weekday mornings or afternoons, most of the others in the evening. We only list what the organisers describe on their own pages. Times change, so check the organiser's own page before you go.

Games and quizzes
At a games table you have something to do and talk about straight away. At the games night of the Bewohnerservice Elisabeth-Vorstadt, the city's neighbourhood service at Elisabethstraße 9, people play board games, cards and quizzes on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month from 18:00 to 21:00. According to the city, you can simply drop in and get to know people from the neighbourhood; the page does not mention a price or sign-up.
The pub quiz Vielfalt ist gefragt takes place on occasional evenings at Coco Kitchen in FORUM 1. You can come on your own: according to the page, you will then be put in a team, and you do not need any prior knowledge. You sign up with the Bewohnerservice; the next evening is on the city's page.
The Schachclub Salzburg-Süd, a chess club, plays on Thursdays at the Bewohnerservice Salzburg-Süd, Hans-Webersdorfer-Straße 27; the city's pages give 18:00 or 19:00 as the start, so confirm the time with the Bewohnerservice beforehand. The city invites interested players to join regularly or just now and then; the page does not give a price.
The neighbourhood and settling in
The Offene Strickrunde, an open knitting circle in Liefering at Eugen-Müller-Straße 59, meets every other Monday, according to the page, for knitting, crochet and conversation, and you can join at any time. The page gives 14:00 to 17:00 in one place and 14:00 to 16:00 in its list of dates, so check the time on the city's page before you go. You do not need to sign up, and there is no entry fee (2026).
The Stammtisch Barrierefrei meets on the first Wednesday of the month from 17:00 to 19:00 at the Müllner Bräustübl, Lindhofstraße 7. The city describes it as an open get-together where everyone is welcome, with room for exchange and suggestions; sign language interpretation is announced. You do not need to sign up.
With Zusammenkommen, the City of Salzburg regularly invites people who have just started living or working in Salzburg, explicitly including students and international professionals. Most recently the newcomers met at the Rupertinum in the old town. The city's announcement gives no fixed rhythm, price or way to sign up; if you are new, ask the city about the next meeting.
Once a month on a Friday, from 10:00 to 11:30, the Bewohnerservice Elisabeth-Vorstadt at Elisabethstraße 9 holds the Stadtteil-Brunch, a neighbourhood brunch. The city invites you to get to know other people from the neighbourhood there; you do not have to sign up. The page does not give a price, and the city's page shows which Friday it is each month.
The Englisch-Konversation, an English conversation group, meets every Friday from 10:00 to 11:00 at the Bewohnerservice Salzburg-Süd, Hans-Webersdorfer-Straße 27. According to the city's calendar, it is a chance to brush up your English, and it is free (2026); the calendar does not say whether you need to sign up.
Dancing and singing
Swingin' Weekday, run by All That Swing, is a swing dance social at the Jazzit, Elisabethstraße 11, open to everyone, on a Wednesday or a Thursday depending on the date. According to All That Swing, entry is free and a small donation is welcome (2026). Some evenings include a free taster with no sign-up and no dance partner needed; check whether your date includes one. All That Swing announces the next evenings on the same page.
The Mozarteum kammerChor, the chamber choir of the Universität Mozarteum, rehearses on Mondays from 18:30 to 20:30 at the university's Kurgarten site (UMAK). The university explicitly invites ambitious singers from the region as well; choir experience is required, and you apply and audition before you join. The page does not give a price.
At the Bewohnerservice Salzburg-Süd, Hans-Webersdorfer-Straße 27, the Chor / Singkreis, a choir and singing circle, meets every other Tuesday afternoon from 15:30 to 16:45. The city welcomes anyone who likes to sing; according to its calendar you can simply join in, and it asks you to sign up. Ten sessions cost 30 € (2026).
Going alone
Pick one format and go three times before you judge it. The first evening is often the most awkward, and every time you return, you are more likely to see familiar faces. A shared activity can make it easier to start a conversation by giving you something to talk about: the game, the quiz question, the dance, the song.
Good openers are deliberately ordinary: "Is this your first time too?", "How did you find out about it?", "Do you know this game?" Ask one follow-up question and listen to the answer.
Making plans to meet again
A good conversation does not turn into a second meeting on its own. Before you leave, suggest something concrete: "Are you coming to the games night again in two weeks?" or "I'm going to the next Swingin' Weekday, want to come?" A specific suggestion is easier to answer than "We should do something sometime".
Try it this week
- Pick one format from the table above
- Put the date in your calendar and check it on the organiser's page
- Arrive five minutes early and talk to one person
- Before you leave, suggest a specific plan to meet again
For organisers
If you host evenings like these, you know the moment: people get on well and then lose touch. before is a web app for organisers. Guests check in at the door with a QR code in their browser, without installing an app, and anyone who likes takes a selfie. The day after, the afterparty is open from 10 am to 8 pm. Anyone who shared a selfie sees everyone else who shared one there and can press the button for meeting again for up to five people. At 8 pm everyone finds out at the same time who wants to see each other again, and only then does a chat open. One-sided wishes stay invisible, and nobody receives a rejection. Nobody needs a profile. More on the page before for organisers.
