Meeting People in Utrecht: Where to Go

Also in: BerlinHamburgCologneMunichViennaZurichGeneva and LausanneLyonBrusselsFrankfurtStuttgartDüsseldorfLeipzigBernBordeauxLilleMarseilleSevilleNew YorkNantesStrasbourgManchesterDublinRotterdamLisbonPorto

Language café, board games, improv, shared dinners, pub quizzes, a hackerspace: nine regular meet-ups in Utrecht to meet people offline. Where, when, how much.

Five people in their late twenties and thirties sitting on the edge of a canal wharf in the warm early evening, feet dangling into the water; one laughs with her head tipped back, one passes a paper bag of cherries along, old brick cellar arches and ivy on the wall behind them

Meeting people in a city is easier when you attend a recurring event: a language café on Wednesday, an improv workshop on Friday, a shared dinner once a month. You see the same faces again, and a stranger quickly becomes someone you know. This guide only lists events that the organiser describes on its own page.

On stage

Improv Utrecht (De Speler)

Improv Utrecht runs drop-in workshops in improvisational theatre, usually on Fridays from 8 to 10 pm during term time, at the Buurtcentrum De Speler, Thorbeckelaan 18; check the booking calendar for holiday breaks and cancellations. The workshops are in English, you need no experience, and according to the organiser many people come on their own. You choose how much to donate (2026); check the current suggested contribution when you register. To secure a place, the organiser recommends signing up on its website; an RSVP on Meetup is also possible. Improv Utrecht drop-in workshops, Improv Utrecht on Meetup

Sharing a table

Community Dinner at De Voorkamer (Lombok)

De Voorkamer, in Lombok, holds a community dinner once a month: community cooks share dishes from their own culinary traditions. You need to register for each dinner. The pages do not state a price or the language spoken at the dinners. Community Dinner at De Voorkamer

Aanschuifdiner at Venster (Leidsche Rijn)

Wijkrestaurant Venster, a neighbourhood restaurant at Berlijnplein 520 in Leidsche Rijn, holds an Aanschuifdiner, Dutch for a dinner where you pull up a chair at one long table, on the first Sunday of the month at 6 pm. It costs 17.50 € (2026), and you reserve on the restaurant's website. The page does not say which language is spoken. vensterutrecht.nl

Pub quizzes

Café Averechts (Lijsterstraat)

On the last Saturday of the month, Café Averechts, Lijsterstraat 49, holds a bilingual pub quiz: doors open at 8 pm, and the quiz starts at 8:30 pm. Teams have up to six people, it costs 2 € per person (2026), and you don't need to sign up. The café does not say that it places people who come alone in a team, so it is best to come with one or two others. Café Averechts pub quiz

English pub quiz at Florin (Nobelstraat)

Florin, Nobelstraat 2, hosts a pub quiz in English twice a month on Wednesdays, at around 9:30 pm, from September to June. Entry costs 1 € per person (2026/27 season). You can't reserve, so the page recommends arriving early. Bring your own team: the page does not say that people on their own are placed in one. Pub quiz at Florin

Going alone

A shared activity makes it easier to start talking, because it gives you something to talk about: the language, the game, the scene, the dish on the table. The first evening is often the most awkward, and each time you come back, you are more likely to see familiar faces. For the two pub quizzes, it is easier to come with one or two others, as neither says it places people on their own in a team.

Good openers are deliberately ordinary: "Is this your first time too?", "How did you find out about it?", "Do you know this game already?" Ask one follow-up question and listen to the answer.

Making plans to meet again

A good conversation does not turn into a second meeting on its own. Before you leave, suggest something concrete: "Are you coming to the improv workshop again next Friday?" or "I'm going to the language café on Wednesday, want to come?" A specific suggestion is easier to answer than "We should do something sometime".

Try it this week

  • Pick one format from the table above
  • Put the date in your calendar and check it on the organiser's page
  • Arrive five minutes early and talk to one person
  • Before you leave, suggest a specific plan to meet again

For organisers

If you host evenings like these, you know the moment: people get on well and then lose touch. before is a web app for organisers. Guests check in at the door with a QR code in their browser, without installing an app, and anyone who likes takes a selfie. The day after, the afterparty is open from 10 am to 8 pm. Anyone who shared a selfie sees everyone else who shared one there and can press the button for meeting again for up to five people. At 8 pm everyone finds out at the same time who wants to see each other again, and only then does a chat open. One-sided wishes stay invisible, and nobody receives a rejection. Nobody needs a profile. More on the page before for organisers.

The afterparty opens after your event

When you check in at an event powered by before, you get the link by email, no later than 24 hours after it ends.
