Language cafés, games nights, a quiz, a running group, open singing, a sewing group and dinner with strangers: real ways to meet people in Hanover.

Four people in their late twenties and thirties around an upturned bike in a back courtyard on a bright autumn afternoon; one man laughs as he holds up an oily finger, one woman pumps up a tyre, two watch holding paper cups, more bikes leaning against the brick wall

Hanover has plenty of regular meet-ups, from a Wednesday afternoon language café to a Friday games night, and if you go regularly, you can see the same people again. This guide sorts the options by type, with concrete examples. We only list what the organisers or the city describe on their own pages. Times change, so check the organiser's own page before you go.

Games and quizzes

At a games table you have something to do and talk about straight away. At the AStA Spieleabend, the student union AStA invites people to play, usually on the second and fourth Friday of the month from 19:30 and mostly at the Conti-Hochhaus in Mitte. The groups at the tables change, and newcomers are welcome. Some dates differ from this pattern, and some evenings take place in a different room or building, so check both the date and the venue in the announcement before you go. The AStA does not state a price.

The Neue Speisekammer in Mitte hosts a games night with board and card games once a month on a Wednesday at 19:00. According to the organiser, you play with people you already know or with people you have not met yet. It is free; a booking, also free, helps them plan (2026).

At the quiz night at the Stadtteilzentrum Stöcken, the community centre in Stöcken, you can come as a team or, according to the event page, find teammates on the spot. It runs on some Fridays in autumn from 19:00 and costs €2 per person (2026). You can sign up by email, by phone or in person.

Language cafés

At a language café you practise German in conversation and meet people along the way. The Sprachcafé DaF für Fortgeschrittene, a German conversation café for advanced learners, meets on Wednesdays from 11:30 to 13:30 at the Freizeitheim Vahrenwald community centre. According to the city's events calendar, it is about speaking German and making social contacts; it is aimed at advanced learners and is free (2026). Sign up beforehand by email or phone.

At the KroKuS community centre in Kronsberg, an Offenes Sprachcafé, an open language café for German from A1 to C2, runs on Wednesdays from 15:30 to 17:00. The city says that everyone is welcome, whatever their level of German. It is free, with no sign-up (2026). It does not take place on some Wednesdays, so check the page first.

The language café at VHS Hannover, the adult education centre, takes place on some Saturdays from 12:00 to 13:30 in the VHS foyer, for speaking German, telling stories and getting to know each other. It is free, with no sign-up (2026).

Running

A fixed time, a shared route and a chat afterwards. The Sunday running meet-up of the Hannover Runners, a running club, starts on Sundays at 10:30 at the Lister Turm in the Zoo neighbourhood, on the edge of the Eilenriede. The club welcomes beginners and experienced runners alike and describes its running meet-ups as free and open (2026).

Singing and crafts

Doing something together quickly gives you something to talk about. At HannoverSingInternational, people sing together at the Kulturzentrum Pavillon in Oststadt every year from May, on the first Thursday of the month at 20:00, with a summer break in July and August. According to the city's events calendar, you do not need to read music, and entry is by donation (2026).

The KroKuS community centre also hosts the Offener Näh- und Handarbeitstreff, an open sewing and crafts group, on Tuesdays from 9:00 to 12:00 and on Thursdays from 16:00 to 18:00. According to the city's page, it is about sewing, helping each other and swapping ideas, and newcomers can join. It is free, with no sign-up; bring your own materials (2026).

Dinner with strangers

At Dinner with Strangers, twelve people who have not met before sit at one shared table in a restaurant. The venues change; recent ones were in Mitte and the Südstadt. For the evenings at Butjer in Linden, a ticket costs €15 per person including a welcome drink, and you order and pay for food and further drinks yourself (2026); for other evenings the page does not state a price. The dinners are listed one by one on the organiser's page, so check there whether one is coming up.

Going alone

Pick one format and go three times before you judge it. The first evening is often the most awkward, and every time you return, you are more likely to see familiar faces. A shared activity can make it easier to start a conversation by giving you something to talk about: the game, the language, the route. At the quiz night in Stöcken, you can come without a team and find teammates there.

Good openers are deliberately ordinary: "Is this your first time too?", "How did you find out about it?", "Do you play here often?" Ask one follow-up question and listen to the answer.

Making plans to meet again

A good conversation does not turn into a second meeting on its own. Before you leave, suggest something concrete: "Are you coming running again next Sunday?" or "I'm going to the language café on Wednesday, want to come?" A specific suggestion is easier to answer than "We should do something sometime".

Try it this week

  • Pick one format from the table above
  • Put the date in your calendar and check it on the organiser's page
  • Arrive five minutes early and talk to one person
  • Before you leave, suggest a specific plan to meet again

For organisers

If you host evenings like these, you know the moment: people get on well and then lose touch. before is a web app for organisers. Guests check in at the door with a QR code in their browser, without installing an app, and anyone who likes takes a selfie. The day after, the afterparty is open from 10 am to 8 pm. Anyone who shared a selfie sees everyone else who shared one there and can press the button for meeting again for up to five people. At 8 pm everyone finds out at the same time who wants to see each other again, and only then does a chat open. One-sided wishes stay invisible, and nobody receives a rejection. Nobody needs a profile. More on the page before for organisers.

The afterparty opens after your event

When you check in at an event powered by before, you get the link by email, no later than 24 hours after it ends.
