Meeting People in Sydney: Where to Go

Also in: BerlinHamburgCologneMunichViennaZurichGeneva and LausanneLyonBrusselsFrankfurtStuttgartDüsseldorfLeipzigBernBordeauxLilleMarseilleSevilleNew YorkNantesStrasbourgManchesterDublinRotterdamUtrechtLisbonPortoTorontoVancouverMelbourne

Running, language exchange, life drawing, tango, swing, dinner with strangers: eight regular meet-ups in Sydney to meet people offline. Where, when, how much.

A few friends in their late twenties and thirties on a picnic rug under a flowering jacaranda in a neighbourhood park on a bright spring afternoon; one laughs as purple petals fall into her hair, one passes round a punnet of strawberries, one leans on his elbow telling a story, a row of terrace houses with iron lace balconies behind them

Meeting people in a city is easier when you attend a recurring event: a run on Tuesday evening, a language exchange after work, a swing class every Monday. You see the same faces again, and a stranger quickly becomes someone you know. This guide only lists events that the organiser describes on its own page.

Running

Sydney Harbour Runners (Darling Harbour)

A free weekly run on Tuesday evenings: the group meets at 6 pm at the Bird Fountain on Cockle Bay Wharf in Darling Harbour and sets off at 6:15 pm. You choose a shorter route of around 6 to 8 km or a longer one of around 11 to 13 km; the routes for each week are on the club's schedule. There are pace groups, and new runners are welcome. You don't need to register in advance, but when you sign in you hand over a signed copy of the participant waiver linked on the club's page; the waiver is for runners aged 18 and over. Redfern Run Club (South Eveleigh and Redfern)

Free weekly runs with no membership and no sign-up, and all paces are welcome. On Tuesdays at 7 am the group runs a 5 km loop from Innovation Plaza in South Eveleigh; on Fridays at 6:15 am it runs 5 km from Gibbons Street Reserve in Redfern and finishes with coffee. Walking, jogging and running are all welcome, and the club says nobody gets left behind. Redfern Run Club

RNRUNCLUB (Rhodes)

Every Tuesday at 7 pm, the run starts from Rhodes Foreshore Dog Park for about 5 km along the water. The organiser calls it free, open to everyone and beginner-friendly; you run at your own pace and walk when you need to. You can simply turn up; checking in through Rallye is optional. Making things

Beautiful Bodies Life Drawing (North Sydney Community Centre)

A life drawing course at the North Sydney Community Centre over nine Wednesday evenings, from 7 to 9:30 pm, with individual and group tuition. According to the centre, it suits different levels of experience. The course costs A$262, or A$235.80 at the concession rate, plus a model fee of A$70 (2026). You need to enrol; the next start date is on the centre's page. Beautiful Bodies Life Drawing

Dancing

Sydney Tango Collective (Paddington)

Tango classes on Tuesday evenings at 395 Oxford Street in Paddington. The beginners' class and the Fundamentals class both run from 6:30 to 7:30 pm, the advanced class follows from 7:30 pm, and an open practica starts at 8:30 pm; the advanced class has entry requirements. You can book on your own, because partners change during the class. According to the website (undated), your first trial class is free and the beginners' course costs A$80 for four weeks; you book ahead. Sydney Tango Collective, classes

The Jitterbug Club (Marrickville, Lane Cove and Baulkham Hills)

You register online for a free first trial class; after that, according to its classes page (undated), a night costs A$23 pay as you go, a five-class pass A$105 and a ten-class pass A$200. Sharing a table with strangers

Timeleft (restaurants across Sydney)

An app that brings you together with four to six people you don't know yet. In Sydney, dinners take place on Wednesdays and Fridays at 7 pm in restaurants across the city. You can book on your own, and the app shows you the venue twelve hours before. You need a membership, whose price depends on the plan, and you pay for what you eat and drink at the venue (2026). timeleft.com/sydney

Going alone

Pick one format and go three times before you judge it. The first evening is often the most awkward, and every time you return, you are more likely to see familiar faces. A shared activity gives you something to talk about straight away: the route, the dance, the drawing, the language you are practising. At the Sydney Tango Collective you can book on your own because partners change during the class, at The Jitterbug Club you don't need a partner, and at Timeleft everyone books on their own anyway.

Good openers are deliberately ordinary: "Is this your first time too?", "How did you find out about it?", "How long have you been coming?" Ask one follow-up question and listen to the answer.

Making plans to meet again

A good conversation does not turn into a second meeting on its own. Before you leave, suggest something concrete: "Are you coming to the run again next Tuesday?" or "I'm going to the language exchange next week, want to come?" A specific suggestion is easier to answer than "We should do something sometime".

Try it this week

  • Pick one format from the table above
  • Put the date in your calendar and check it on the organiser's page
  • Arrive five minutes early and talk to one person
  • Before you leave, suggest a specific plan to meet again

For organisers

If you host evenings like these, you know the moment: people get on well and then lose touch. before is a web app for organisers. Guests check in at the door with a QR code in their browser, without installing an app, and anyone who likes takes a selfie. The day after, the afterparty is open from 10 am to 8 pm. Anyone who shared a selfie sees everyone else who shared one there and can press the button for meeting again for up to five people. At 8 pm everyone finds out at the same time who wants to see each other again, and only then does a chat open. One-sided wishes stay invisible, and nobody receives a rejection. Nobody needs a profile. More on the page before for organisers.

The afterparty opens after your event

When you check in at an event powered by before, you get the link by email, no later than 24 hours after it ends.
