Languages and international evenings
Three meet-ups in Düsseldorf run under one shared Meetup group for language tables. At the Sprachenabend Düsseldorf, every language is welcome, on the first Sunday of each month at 17:00 at Café Saffran's in Pempelfort: tables form depending on who comes, usually including English, German, French, Italian and Spanish. The group is glad if you sign up on Meetup, but according to its description you can also just turn up.
According to its listing, the Monday German Conversation Meetup meets at the same café on Mondays at 19:00, an evening in German. All levels are welcome, explicitly including beginners who can already hold a simple conversation. Attendance is free, and at least one drink is expected (2026).
At Bonjour Düsseldorf, people speak French, on the first and third Wednesday of each month at 19:30. In autumn and winter the group meets at a restaurant in the city centre, in summer at the Stadtstrand Golzheim. The group asks you to sign up on Meetup so that it can plan the table.
Social Melting Pot invites people every Thursday from 19:00 to midnight to the Brauerei Kürzer, Fichtenstraße 21, open to locals, newcomers, travellers and language learners. According to the organiser, coming alone is common, and you do not need to sign up. Entry costs €6 and includes your first drink and stickers for your languages (2026).
The Düsseldorf Expat Meetup is for newcomers and locals who want to make international contacts. The group meets once a month on a Thursday at 19:00 at Fatty's Irish Pub in the Altstadt, and you can simply turn up. It asks you to buy a drink and introduce yourself. The group's Meetup page lists the dates.
Games and quizzes
At a games table you have something to do and talk about straight away. Düsselgamers host board game evenings several times a week, including at the Holo Café on Immermannstraße and at venues in Flingern; according to their own website, they play regularly on Tuesdays and Fridays. There are sessions for beginners and games in German and English. What an evening costs depends on the evening: according to Meetup, some cost €4 and one €10 (2026), others are free if you order something at the venue. Let the group know on Meetup that you are coming.
At the McLaughlins Quiz at McLaughlins Irish Pub in the Altstadt, teams play on Sundays at 19:30, in German and English. New teams are welcome, and the pub recommends booking a table.
Kneipenquiz NRW comes to different Düsseldorf pubs on several evenings a month, usually at 19:00, such as Bier zu Liebe, Hotte-Hü and Jägerstübchen. According to the organiser, teams also form from people who did not know each other before. How you sign up, by phone, by email or with a ticket, depends on the venue and is shown with each date.
Dancing and running
Swing in Düsseldorf is a club with swing dance classes that run weekly or every two weeks, and an open Practice Time on some Fridays. The club gives the venue with each date in its calendar. Contact the club before your first class. A single class usually costs €15, reduced €9 (price list 2025); according to the club's calendar, the Practice Time is free and needs no registration (2026).
At the Stadtfreunde Social Run, the Stadtfreunde set off every Sunday at 12:00 from the Cafébar Die Fliese, Flügelstraße 58, in Oberbilk. The run is five kilometres at a relaxed pace, with an extra group for faster runners. According to the organiser, many people come alone, and afterwards there is coffee and conversation. How to sign up is explained on the page.
Dinner with strangers
Timeleft brings groups of four to six strangers together for dinner at a restaurant in Düsseldorf on Wednesdays at 19:00, and there are coffee groups on Saturdays at 15:00. You book on your own in the app and are placed in a group. To book, you need a subscription whose price depends on the plan you choose; you pay for food and drinks separately (2026).
Going alone
Pick one format and go three times before you judge it. The first evening is often the most awkward, and every time you return, you are more likely to see familiar faces. A shared activity can make it easier to start a conversation by giving you something to talk about: the language, the game, the quiz question.
Good openers are deliberately ordinary: "Is this your first time too?", "How did you find out about it?", "Do you play here often?" Ask one follow-up question and listen to the answer.
Making plans to meet again
A good conversation does not turn into a second meeting on its own. Before you leave, suggest something concrete: "Are you coming to the language meet-up again next Monday?" or "I'm going to the quiz on Sunday, want to come?" A specific suggestion is easier to answer than "We should do something sometime".
Try it this week
- Pick one format from the table above
- Put the date in your calendar and check it on the organiser's page
- Arrive five minutes early and talk to one person
- Before you leave, suggest a specific plan to meet again
For organisers
If you host evenings like these, you know the moment: people get on well and then lose touch. before is a web app for organisers. Guests check in at the door with a QR code in their browser, without installing an app, and anyone who likes takes a selfie. The day after, the afterparty is open from 10 am to 8 pm. Anyone who shared a selfie sees everyone else who shared one there and can press the button for meeting again for up to five people. At 8 pm everyone finds out at the same time who wants to see each other again, and only then does a chat open. One-sided wishes stay invisible, and nobody receives a rejection. Nobody needs a profile. More on the page before for organisers.
