Options by type
Running
A fixed time, a shared route and no need to set off alone. CRU holds an open run twice a week: on Sundays at 10:00 at the Hauptmarkt and on Wednesdays at 18:38 at a meeting point that changes every week. According to its own page, everyone is welcome, beginners included; you do not need to sign up, and it is free (2026). The website says that CRU posts the Wednesday meeting point on Instagram each week.
Languages and international evenings
The Meetup group International Friends runs several regular formats. At the Wednesday Meetup, newcomers, locals and travellers meet every other Wednesday at 19:00 at the A&O Hostel, Bahnhofstraße 13, to get to know each other. An RSVP on Meetup is welcome but not required. The group does not state an entry price.
Also at the A&O Hostel, International Friends hold the Sprachcafé Nürnberg language café every Thursday. Several languages are planned, among them German, English, Spanish, French and Italian, and all levels are welcome. Afterwards there is time to chat and to play games. Again the group does not state an entry price, but it recommends buying at least one drink at the venue; RSVP on Meetup beforehand.
The WIN-Sprachcafé is a meet-up for practising German and getting to know people from all over the world. It takes place at Marie15, Marienstraße 15, on selected Mondays from 18:30 to 20:00; the next dates are listed in the series on the page. People learning German can practise there without pressure, and native speakers are invited to join the conversation. It is free (2026), and you do not need to sign up. The Nürnberg Social Hub also announces the language café on Meetup.
Open evenings and a monthly get-together
The Nürnberg Social Hub also runs the Midweek Social Circle, an evening every other Wednesday at 19:00. The group says explicitly that you are welcome to come alone, and name tags make it easier to get started. According to the group, most of its meet-ups are in English. The venue is given with each date on Meetup.
The association Start with a Friend holds a monthly get-together, a Stammtisch, at different venues in Nuremberg. On its locations page it also mentions a language café, games evenings, cooking and sport. According to the association, everyone over 18 can take part, and its activities are free (undated). Find upcoming dates and registration details in the association's event portal.
Reading and a museum evening
The Monthly Book Club of International Friends meets every four weeks on Sundays at 18:30 at Café Extrablatt, Lorenzer Platz 3A. According to the group, you are welcome even if you have not finished the book. The page does not mention the language or a price; the group asks you to RSVP on Meetup.
The GNM Sessions at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Kartäusergasse 1, are aimed, according to the museum, at people from their early twenties to their late thirties. At the Meet Art + Friends evening there is a welcome drink, a guided tour and then music, snacks and time to talk. Coming alone is explicitly welcome; the evening is in German, and internationals are welcome. The sessions take place on individual days, and you can find dates and tickets in the events programme. A ticket for Meet Art + Friends costs €15, or €12 for Aufseßige (2026); the other sessions have their own prices.
Quizzing
At the Savvy Saturdays Pub Quiz, you answer quiz questions in English as part of a team every other Saturday at 15:30 at the café bar Stille Wasser, Zerzabelshofer Hauptstraße 18. You sign up through the Bildungszentrum Nürnberg, and each session costs €6 (2026). According to the venue, quizzing is a way to meet new people. The pages do not say whether you can come alone and join a team, so it is best to ask the Bildungszentrum beforehand.
Going alone
Pick one format and go three times before you judge it. The first evening is often the most awkward, and every time you return, you are more likely to see familiar faces. A shared activity can make it easier to start a conversation by giving you something to talk about: the route, the language, the book, the quiz question.
Good openers are deliberately ordinary: "Is this your first time too?", "How did you find out about it?", "Which language are you practising?" Ask one follow-up question and listen to the answer.
Making plans to meet again
A good conversation does not turn into a second meeting on its own. Before you leave, suggest something concrete: "Are you coming to the language café again next Thursday?" or "I'm running again on Sunday, want to come?" A specific suggestion is easier to answer than "We should do something sometime".
Try it this week
- Pick one format from the table above
- Put the date in your calendar and check it on the organiser's page
- Arrive five minutes early and talk to one person
- Before you leave, suggest a specific plan to meet again
For organisers
If you host evenings like these, you know the moment: people get on well and then lose touch. before is a web app for organisers. Guests check in at the door with a QR code in their browser, without installing an app, and anyone who likes takes a selfie. The day after, the afterparty is open from 10 am to 8 pm. Anyone who shared a selfie sees everyone else who shared one there and can press the button for meeting again for up to five people. At 8 pm everyone finds out at the same time who wants to see each other again, and only then does a chat open. One-sided wishes stay invisible, and nobody receives a rejection. Nobody needs a profile. More on the page before for organisers.
