Meeting People in Rotterdam: Where to Go

Shared dinners, a language café, board games, a pub quiz, open dance and a choir: nine regular meet-ups in Rotterdam to meet people offline. Where, when, how much.

A few people in their late twenties and thirties in a rooftop garden among raised planters at golden hour, sharing takeaway food from cardboard boxes set on an upturned crate; one laughs as she passes a box along, one sits on the edge of a planter telling a story, modern apartment blocks and harbour cranes far behind them, out of focus

Meeting people in a city is easier when you attend a recurring event: a shared dinner on Tuesday, a language café on Thursday, a dance evening on Friday. You see the same faces again, and a stranger quickly becomes someone you know. This guide only lists events that the organiser describes on its own page.

Sharing a table

Aan tafel met de buren (Plein, Katendrecht)

Aan tafel met de buren, Dutch for "at the table with the neighbours", is a shared neighbourhood meal. Fenix lists it on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 7 pm at Plein, Dolf Henkesplein 1, in Katendrecht. Tickets cost 5 €, and you can choose to pay 7.50 € or 10 € instead (2026); you buy them at the kiosk, and the organiser recommends buying early. The page does not say which language is spoken. Check the programme for the Tuesdays still listed. Aan tafel met de buren at Fenix

Kom je bij ons eten? (Aan het Water, Maashaven)

The Rotterdams Wijktheater hosts Kom je bij ons eten? (Dutch for "will you come and eat with us?") at Aan het Water, Brielselaan 157, by the Maashaven: storytelling dinners and a big neighbourhood meal. According to the theatre, they take place twice a month, as a lunch or a dinner, and everyone is welcome. Tickets are pay what you can, from 0 to 25 € (2026); you reserve on the programme page. Stadsgesprekken aan Vredestafels (venues vary)

Platform L&R invites people to its Stadsgesprekken (city conversations) at Vredestafels, Dutch for "peace tables", where people share a meal and talk together. The venues and themes change, and the meetings take place on several dates through the year, mostly in the evening. The page does not state a price, the language of the meetings or a way to sign up; you can ask for updates by email. Platform L&R activities

Timeleft (venue shown in the app)

An app that brings you together with four to six people you don't know yet, for dinner at a restaurant in Rotterdam on Wednesdays at 7 pm. You can book on your own, up to 13 hours beforehand. The app shows the subscription prices before you pay and reveals the restaurant 12 hours before the dinner; you pay for food and drinks separately (2026). The page does not say which language the dinners are in. timeleft.com/rotterdam

Talking

Language Café (Volksuniversiteit Rotterdam, Heemraadssingel)

The Volksuniversiteit Rotterdam holds a Language Café in its foyer at Heemraadssingel 275-277: conversations in different languages, with a moderator. It usually takes place twice a month on Thursdays from 7:15 to 9:15 pm, but not on public holidays or during school holidays; check the organiser's calendar for the dates. Entry is free (2026), and you don't need to sign up; you can simply drop in. Language Café at the Volksuniversiteit

Weekly board game meet-up at Spellenhuis (Schilderstraat)

Spellenhuis, which has a games café in Rotterdam, runs a board game meet-up every Thursday from 7 to 10:30 pm at Schilderstraat 20A, in the city centre. Beginners and experienced players are welcome, and the group page is in English. It costs 6 € per person (2026). Besides the RSVP, the Meetup listing asks you to sign up on the café's own booking page too; walk-ins are welcome if there is space. Board games at Spellenhuis on Meetup, Spellenhuis Rotterdam

Pub quiz at Verhip (Lloydkwartier)

Verhip, in the Lloydkwartier, lists its pub quiz nights in its own agenda, starting at 9 pm, with a link to sign up. According to Verhip, the quiz is on the last Tuesday of the month, and one week earlier in December; check the agenda for the next one. The page gives no price and does not say which language the quiz is in or whether you can join a team on the night, so it is easier to come with a team or to ask beforehand. Verhip agenda

Singing and dancing

Open Floor Rotterdam (Wijktheater De Buurvrouw, Schiebroek)

An open dance session on Fridays from 7:30 to 9 pm, except during school holidays and on public holidays, at the Wijktheater De Buurvrouw in Schiebroek. You don't need any dance experience, and no fixed steps are taught. You sign up by 4 pm on the day. The autumn timetable is on the website; the timetable page gives no price, so check it with the organiser. Open Floor Rotterdam

The Open Choir (Pauluskerk, Mauritsweg)

Art Ground Up runs The Open Choir, an open choir project: you don't need to be able to read music or have any singing experience. The Christmas edition has five rehearsals at the Pauluskerk, Mauritsweg 20, in November and December, followed by a concert at the Muziekwerf. You pay a monthly contribution whose amount you choose yourself (2026), and you sign up on the project page. The Open Choir at Art Ground Up

Going alone

A shared activity makes it easier to start talking, because it gives you something to talk about: the food on the table, the language, the game, the song. The first evening is often the most awkward, and each time you come back, you are more likely to see familiar faces. For the pub quiz, it is easier to come with one or two others, as Verhip's page does not say whether people on their own can join a team.

Good openers are deliberately ordinary: "Is this your first time too?", "How did you find out about it?", "Do you know this game already?" Ask one follow-up question and listen to the answer.

Making plans to meet again

A good conversation does not turn into a second meeting on its own. Before you leave, suggest something concrete: "Are you coming to the next Language Café?" or "I'm going to the board games on Thursday, want to come?" A specific suggestion is easier to answer than "We should do something sometime".

Try it this week

  • Pick one format from the table above
  • Put the date in your calendar and check it on the organiser's page
  • Arrive five minutes early and talk to one person
  • Before you leave, suggest a specific plan to meet again

For organisers

If you host evenings like these, you know the moment: people get on well and then lose touch. before is a web app for organisers. Guests check in at the door with a QR code in their browser, without installing an app, and anyone who likes takes a selfie. The day after, the afterparty is open from 10 am to 8 pm. Anyone who shared a selfie sees everyone else who shared one there and can press the button for meeting again for up to five people. At 8 pm everyone finds out at the same time who wants to see each other again, and only then does a chat open. One-sided wishes stay invisible, and nobody receives a rejection. Nobody needs a profile. More on the page before for organisers.

The afterparty opens after your event

When you check in at an event powered by before, you get the link by email, no later than 24 hours after it ends.
